Whooping Cranes

The National Geographic March 2024 feature on whooping cranes documents their 2,500-mile migration from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. The story highlights the species' recovery from just 16 birds in the 1940s to around 850 today, thanks to decades of conservation work. Photographer Michael Forsberg's imagery showcases the cranes' journey and the challenges they face, as well as the efforts to protect these endangered birds across North America.
